Interalios: The Energetic Update

04 November 2022

Boy howdy, it's been a minute. This update has been kicking around for a while and I'm happy to say it's finally reached the point where I should just get over it and release it already. A lot of stuff has accumulated so let's dig in.

New Types

Yeah that's right, another set of new types. Three to be precise and they're a little more...out there.

  • Synth - Synth monsters are all about collectivity, amalgamation and synthesis. As well as embodying the idea of 'artificiality' (as in synthetic, etc.)

  • Atomic - Atomic monsters are the antithesis of Synth. They represent the boundless energy of the atomic particle, but also it's nature as an 'indivisible unit', embodying themes like lonesomeness and isolation.

  • Void - Finally, rounding out the trio is void. A rare type that represents both the emptiness of space, but of destructive tendencies. A little less poetic, perhaps. It happens.

With new types comes new monsters to help fill them out, as well. There's like at least 10 new ones. I'm bad at counting so there may even be more, who knows? Guess you'll just have to boot the game up and find out yourself!

Funky Tunes

Some more music has been added to the game as well, in addition to a new title screen. Among these are two more battle themes, which the game will randomly alternate between for online battles. If you follow the name scheme that's laid out, you can even add your own alongside it.

That's not all in the theatrics department though, animations got a little love this update with most moves being given an animation that isn't the default one.

For the nitty-gritty I'd recommend reading the full changelog for some of the minor details regarding balance, since a good bit of that was also changed.

Next Moves

With this courtesy update out of the way, I'll be focusing full-force on the engine rewrite. This update has made it abundantly clear that Interalios is just not gonna be able to continue on the old game engine ("Apsis") I wrote for it in college. Spaghetti code? Baby, I got the whole spaghetti factory, and frankly? It's riddled with OSHA violations.

With any luck, this next update will be out in a timely manner! Until then, enjoy the pasta dinner!
